Most people easily recognize the start of the new year as a time of new beginnings and change. This year, I’d like to encourage all of you to set a literary goal or make a change in some literary way.
Perhaps you want to read more books.
Maybe you just want to finish a book you began earlier.
You might be interested in reading the newspaper on a regular basis.
Writing in your journal daily, or even once a week, might be on your to-do-list for this year.
Whatever your literary goal may be, share it with us for a chance to win a $10 gift certificate to Borders. All you have to do is leave a comment below, stating your goal and your plan for accomplishing that goal. You will automatically be entered for a drawing to win a great literary prize!
I’ll start. This year I’ve decided that I’m going to keep track of all the books I’ve read. This comes in two parts. I’m on a long-term quest to record all the books I’ve ever read—at least all the ones I remember ever reading—and those I’ll read over the course of the next year.
I’ve found a great way to help me accomplish this goal. I became a member of Goodreads (It’s free and easy!)
Once you create an account, you can search for books you’ve read or want to read, you can rank the books or write a short review.
You can browse through the books you’ve read and sort them by title, author, ranking, or genre.
As an added bonus, you can browse books that you’re friends have read or recommend. It’s a great way to meet new people and new books!
Essentially, GoodReads is a great way to meet my goal of keeping track of all the books I read.
What’s your literary goal? Don’t forget to tell us about it in the comments below for your chance to win a $10 dollar gift certificate to Border! All entries for the drawing must be made by February 5, 2009.
I want to FINISH (not just start) one book of substance a month. I have a long list of non-fiction that needs reading so I'm going to focus on that list.
ReplyDeleteI'm glad you mentioned Good Reads because it's been really fun to start listing books I've read and enjoyed.

I read your comment about maybe a goal could be daily --or even once a week-- journal writing and I laughed out loud (maybe I should have cringed in embarrassment). My goal this year is to write a minimum of one monthly entry in Carmen's journal so that her early life isn't forgotten amidst the cobwebs of my memory.
ReplyDeleteLike you, Lonica, I want to keep a record of the books I've read. I'll have to check out that site you recommended, thanks for the idea!
ReplyDeleteI may have too many goals to keep up with, which means I have a long way to go to become my ideal level of "literate". To start, I want to write in my journal once a week (Sundays) since I just realized that my last entry says "I'm pregnant" (which was a long time ago). I also want to make a list of the books I have read and would like to read. I want to always be reading a book (have one ready for when I have a few minutes to spare). And I want to become more scripture literate--know where events in the Book of Mormon take place, etc. Good Luck! (Shannon Pence)
ReplyDeleteMy goal is to read ALL of the Ensign EVERY month. Hopefully I'll be more successful this year than I was last.
ReplyDeletei want to read more non-fiction books.
ReplyDeleteAgain, this is an excellent idea. i have wanted a library of my (mine) own for I don't know how long (maybe 23 years, before my son was born?). Doing this blog or literacy group would be fun since I am returning to Regis University soon. i plan to complete a Computer Science degree I can run my own business fixing and repairing computers for the low income community. If anyone knows, maybe there are shops or places for the low income to have there computers fixed. Literacy is important because in the field of business, there is a detrimental need for literacy, if not, then there is no communication going on.
ReplyDeleteGoal #1: Continue rereading my college curriculum ("The Great Books" or the Western classics: http://www.stjohnscollege.edu/academic/SFreadlist.shtml) at the reduced rate of 1 seminar reading per month. This is a 30-year goal.
ReplyDeleteGoal #2: Keep track of all the books I have read online
Goal #3: Learn a new GRE word each week
Goal #4: Teach Charlotte English and sign language

I want to finish "Pride and Prejudice" and start a written account of our (Tony, Jenny, Seth) family history. I would also love to write a paper once a month on a current event or social issue.
